Tulip Gallmite Treatment

The problem

The presence of mites in flower bulbs is a major problem. Both the bulb and the root wreath and flower can be affected. In addition to visible damage to the bulb and flower, there is also a risk of indirect damage, because tulip gall mites can transmit the tulip virus-x (TVX). Gall mites are considered the main vectors of TVX, as highlighted in a study by Kock et al. in 2008. Affected bulbs may face export barriers due to direct damage and virus transmission to other crops such as grain.

Possible solutions

The commonly used room treatment of flower bulbs with Actellic-50 during storage has no longer been permitted since the beginning of 2014. Since 2013, mites have been controlled with Movento, an insecticide with a side effect on gall mites. However, after 2025, this product as well as Batavia, will no longer be permitted. An immersion treatment can be effective, but the approval of the drug Apollo also expires.

Due to increasing restrictions on the use of chemical pesticides, there is an increasing demand for new methods of mite control.

Our solution

ULO treatment of tulip bulbs has been done since 1997, when Cold Store WFO carried out tests at Besseling. ULO (Ultra Low Oxygen) or CATT (Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment) is a treatment in which the temperature is increased and the oxygen level is significantly reduced, possibly combined with an increased CO2 level. The effectiveness of treatment depends on the oxygen level, temperature and duration of treatment.

To carry out a treatment, a completely gas-tight room, a nitrogen generator and a measuring and control system are required.
